Keena named on PFAI Team of the Year

Fresh from being named Player of the Year by the Sligo Rovers fans and finishing the season as top scorer in the Premier Division, Mullingar's Aidan Keena has been named on the PFAI Team of the Year.

Keena finished the season with 18 league goals and three assists from 32 games, four golas ahead of Eoin Doyle from St Patrick's Athletic.

It had been expected by many League of Ireland fans that the former Mullingar Athletic striker would be shortlisted by his peers for the Player of the Year award, but he lost out to Derry City’s Mark Connolly and Cameron Dummigan, and Shamrock Rovers’ Rory Gaffney.

Speaking a few weeks ago, Sligo Rovers manager John Russell said that Keena's performances this season have been top drawer.

“He’s been a real talisman for us, his quality, for me he’s the best player in the league. Hopefully that will be acknowledged at the awards come the end of the season.

"For us, we’re delighted to have him. It’s not just the goals he scores, he creates goals, chasing back into the right back position tonight making tackles.”
