Motorists regularly driving wrong way down Blackhall Street - Wallace

A serious accident will happen if motorists continue to drive the wrong way down Blackhall Street and onto Mount Street, a county councillor has warned.

Cllr Emily Wallace's shop Tots Paradise is located on Blackhall Street and she says that motorists regularly drive the wrong way up the busy one way road.

“Every week I am seeing more than one car coming down the wrong way and turning back onto Mount Street because they won't go the long way around Blackhall.

“The problem is that when you are walking as a pedestrian on that side of Mount Street you are not looking up Blackhall Street, you are watching the traffic on Mount Street to your right. You are not waiting for a car to come the wrong way down a street.”

Cllr Wallace says that large numbers of pedestrians walk along Mount Street every day, including groups of primary and secondary school students going to Mullingar Arts Centre. She says that there needs to be more signage and road markings informing motorists that Blackhall Street is one way.

“It has been brought to the council's attention and it's just about getting action and doing something. It's as simple as putting double white lines on the road and [painting] one way street. I asked for signage two years ago and in fairness they did do it, but it has faded.

“I am seeing it every couple of days. I have a lot of pictures of cars going the wrong way.”
