Prestigious award for Whitehall man

A native of Castlepollard who is a major player in the construction industry in the UK has been given a prestigious award in London. James Coffey, chairman of the London-based Coffey Group, who recently acquired the former Hotel Castlepollard premises, was presented with an award by the British-Irish Trade Alliance (BITA) in the Mansion House, London recently.

The award, presented by Lord Mayor of London, Vincent Keaveney and the director of the BITA, Vincent Dignam, was in recognition of Mr Coffey’s huge contribution to the construction industry in the Greater London area and the southeast of England in recent decades.

Mr Coffey was born in Bigwood, Whitehall, Castlepollard and moved to London 34 years ago with his wife Teresa (née Reynolds, Mullingar). They have four children.

• The Westmeath Examiner has learned that the renamed Castle Varagh Hotel in Castlepollard, which has undergone extensive refurbishment under Mr Coffey’s ownership, will open its doors on Wednesday, November 30.
