Met Éireann recorded an 'ice day' at its stations in Westmeath and Roscommon

Met Éireann reported that yesterday (Monday) was an 'ice day' at its weather stations in Westmeath and Roscommon, which means the highest temperature recorded during the day was still below freezing.

The forecaster also said that the provisional weather data from yesterday suggested it was the coldest day the country had experienced since Christmas Day of 2010.

Eleven of the 25 Met Eireann stations across the country had 'ice days' yesterday, including those in Mullingar and at Mount Dillon, Roscommon.

The maximum temperature recorded at both the Westmeath and Roscommon stations yesterday was -1.8 degrees Celsius.

Ballyhaise in Cavan had the most consistently cold weather station in the country yesterday, with its maximum temperature a frigid -3.2 degrees.

However, the lowest temperature recorded at any stage yesterday was in Athenry, Galway, and was -7.2 degrees.

As of noon today, it was 0 degrees at the Met Éireann station in Mullingar, and -3 degrees at the Mount Dillon, Roscommon, station.

The current spell of cold weather looks set to continue until Friday, with a yellow-level warning for low temperatures and ice in effect until noon that day.
