Gallery: Launch of Raharney (Rath Airne) A History

After an evening of music and heritage at the Third Place, Raharney last July, the committee of Raharney History Group – Shay Murtagh, Shay Callaghan, Lillie Connaughton, Annette Farrell, Rita Monaghan and Ann Maher – decided to write a book on the history of the area and pass on the legacy of knowledge about the townlands, people and historic documents.

The book, which was launched on Saturday evening, features interviews with people from the area, items on the GAA, the local economy through the years and old photographs.

Famous people also feature in the book including Francis Vida Lacey, MBE, whose father and mother lived in Craddenstown and emigrated to Australia in 1962. Francis Vida Lacey studied art and was awarded the Society of NSW medal and Coronation medal in 1953.

Also in it are the Murtagh brothers, Stephen and Matt, of the band The Academic, who have played at Vicar Street and opened for The Rolling Stones in Croke Park; they also travelled extensively across Europe and North America.

Dr Tom Hunt (historian) launched ‘Raharney (Rath Airne) A History’ in the Third Place on Saturday, December 10, where a large crowd attended. Actor Mary McEvoy made a guest appearance.

Books can be bought in local businesses at €10 and proceeds are going to the local St Vincent de Paul.
