Mayor calls for winter walking safety audit for women

How safe do women feel walking in the winter evenings in the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad (MDMK)?

Cllr Hazel Smyth, mayor of the MDMK, has called for a winter walking safety audit for women. Speaking at the December meeting, she said public spaces have to be safe to walk in.

She suggested that a sub committee be established to see if people are satisfied, if they feel safe or if there are areas of concern.

David Jones, director of services, said the council are committed to providing safe areas for pedestrians. Any specific areas that are highlighted will be examined.

Cllr Smyth also called for a communications channel such as a WhatsApp group for community groups to exchange community watch updates. The suggestion has been referred to the Community Section in the context of future policy initiatives by the Joint Policing Committee.
