RTÉ Archives takes a look back at the Deep Freeze of 1982

The RTÉ Archives have a short film on the deep freeze of 1982.

Taken from a RTÉ News report broadcast on January 10, 1982, reporter Andrew Kelly told how six Air Corps helicopters flew twenty seven ambulance missions and eleven food drops.

You can watch it back here.

"More food drops are planned including the village of Newcastle in County Dublin which has been cut off for days," said Kelly.

The Army press office had issued a statement saying they had no supplies of bread or milk, and people in difficulty should contact their local Garda station.

"The helicopters are also being used to assist the ESB in restoring electrical power, and bring those who have been without power back on the grid," continued Kelly.

The Automobile Association (AA) also warned that most roads throughout the country were still in a dangerous condition, and advised drivers to stay off the roads.

"While many roads have opened up again, there are fears that the freezing temperatures will again make them impassable.
