WATCH: Garda Air Support Unit over Mullingar

The Garda Air Support Unit was spotted over Mullingar today, Tuesday January 17.

It hovered over the town centre, in the Blackhall area, for a number of minutes, shortly before 12 midday.

According to a spokesperson at Mullingar Garda Station however, there are "no operational procedures ongoing at this time."

The spokesperspon added that "there could be any number of reasons" why the unit, which is based at Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel, was over the town.

According to the Garda website, the aircraft may be deployed to incidents in the following cases: Immediate threat to life; Incidents of a criminal, terrorist or other nationally important nature; Immediate threat of serious public disorder; Tasks leading to the prevention or detection of crime; Evidence gathering; Intelligence gathering; Photographic tasks; or Traffic Management/Monitoring.
