Shandonagh celebrate and look ahead to busy year

By Damien Maher

The community of Shandonagh were out in force at the Mullingar Park Hotel last Saturday evening for the GAA club’s dinner dance, at which former Westmeath senior football supremo Jack Cooney was the guest of honour.

It proved a great occasion for the 230 attendees and Cooney was fulsome in his praise of the progress the Shandonagh GAA Club has made in recent years as they make a return to the senior grade. He referred to their memorable victory over Tubberclair in the Intermediate Football Championship final replay last October and urged them to push on and consolidate their place at senior level in the coming years.

The importance of working hard in this regard was stressed and Cooney also noted how welcoming the club has been to Westmeath in general over the years, accommodating them for important championship fixtures at different stages. The venue has also been called up by the Westmeath adult and underage set-ups at various stages and they were well received.

There were also words from manager Kevin Hickey, who of course led Shandonagh to intermediate glory for the second time last year. The evening was also significant for honouring Gerry and Georgina Hickey, who celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, a proud moment for them both.

The jovial times continued as Brendan Killian celebrated his birthday and there plenty of reasons for Sonia Webb to smile as she scooped the Shandonagh GAA Lotto jackpot of €8,500. The club also completed a 50/50 fundraising draw in which Anna Fallon landed the top prize of €600 – Ollie Brennan won €240 and Liam Cahill and Mark Geoghegan were among the €120 winners.

Music was by The Whites Cakes band from Roscommon.

Tommy Brennan, club chairman, said the dinner dance was a wonderful social occasion and came at an appropriate time of the year for the club as they continue with the ambitious development project at their fine club grounds in Kilpatrick, Mullingar. The development includes a new all-weather juvenile pitch, a full-size all-weather adult pitch and a 1km floodlit walkway. It is planned for completion at the end of this year.
