League fixtures begin in Westmeath

It's a busy weekend on the Westmeath GAA front as the local club leagues get underway next Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The All County Football League will see action across five divisions over the three days, with defending champions, The Downs, taking on neighbours Coralstown/Kinnegad in a tasty derby under lights on Friday evening (Kinnegad, 8pm).

There are big inter county games also, not least on Sunday next at TEG Cusack Park, Mullingar, where Westmeath take on neighbours Offaly in round three of the National Football League (2pm).

"Offaly are sitting on top of the table and it's a great game to look forward to. It will sharpen the focus of our lads and it's great to have young players like Danny Scahill and Senan Baker emerging," remarked Westmeath senior football manager, Dessie Dolan, following Westmeath's win over Longford, at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park in round two.

"It's still early in the season. We had an important win over Longford, but Sunday will be a tough game. There's always lively debate among the Offaly and Westmeath supporters, for bragging rights. I live in Moate, not far from Tubber, and I know Bernard Allen, a former student of mine, was on fire for Offaly against Fermanagh in the last round!

"The connections are very close; we'd all want to win it, but it will be a tough game," he added.
