Clarke's 'A' move three points clear of Shamrocks

Leaders, Clarke’s ‘A’ consolidated their position at the top of the North Westmeath Darts League with a 6-0 away victory over the Bridge Bar, in last Friday’s all-Mullingar clash.

Clive Kelly lined out a strong side and Matt Cullen was forced to play without some of his leading marksmen, including Declan Ward, Jim Bob Baker and Matthew Cullen (Jnr.). Clarke’s ‘A’ began strongly and Dylan Powell was in no mood to hang around as he took the opening game of the evening against Matt Cullen.

Ali Powell mixed the sublime and the ridiculous at times, but showed class is permanent as he almost took out a 170 (hitting 25 when going for bull with the final dart) in his win over Michael Raleigh. Sean Ward was excellent for Cullen’s in the next game, but unluckily for him he ran into a very sticky competitor in John Corr, who kept it tight all the way; when Ward marginally missed 32 (hitting double eight with the first and then wiring the same double with the next two darts) Corr pounced to win it.

That made it 3-0 on the night and all the momentum was with Clarke’s ‘A’ at this point. Keith Powell, Trevor McDonnell and Paddy Burke took the next three games to complete a clean sweep on the night, but the home side were most unlucky not to get games on the board.

Victory has moved Clarke’s ‘A’ three points clear of Shamrocks (Mullingar) at the top of the table, with Grennan’s (Milltownpass) third and The Wagon Wheel (Ballynacargy) in fourth spot. There was no other league action at the weekend and the plan now is to get those fixtures played next Friday before moving into the final two rounds. The table now reads: Clarke's 'A' 29 points; Shamrocks 26; Grennan's 19; The Wagon Wheel 16; Bridge Bar 11; Clarke's 'B' 11; Bagnall's 11; Western Gem 4; McHugh's 4.

This week's fixtures: Clarke's 'B' vs McHugh's; Shamrocks vs Grennan's; Western Gem vs The Wagon Wheel; Bagnall's vs the Bridge Bar.
