Women in Business: Dapper Shams

Dapper Shams, located at 1 Pearse Street, Mullingar, opened almost four years ago and is run by Raharney lady and busy mother of four Sam McKeogh.

Sam will be celebrating 30 years in the business this year, having worked in both barbers and hairdressers in Ireland and the UK. Gigi Barbers on Castle Street and Mac’s Barbers on Mount Street, is where it all began in Mullingar for Sam.

Taking the leap to open her salon was a brave decision supported wholly by her family. “Allowing me to open my own business gave me the freedom I needed to not only care for my family but also have the freedom to do what I wanted in my own salon. It was such hard work to get the salon up and running. Since opening she is delighted her business has been going from strength to strength. Sam would also like to advise women who might find themselves torn between raising a family and starting a business – Don’t give up, keep going!”

Sam recently located a career plan she had written when she was 16 that mentioned that one day she would have her own salon; in 2019 that dream came true and it is still a success for the local businesswoman.

Specialising in children’s cuts, her salon is also suitable for children with additional needs as she offers a unique one-to-one appointment for people who may require that service. She offers traditional cuts for both gents and ladies with families welcome to attend together.
