'Ireland AM' broadcasts live from Athlone Castle

Virgin Media Ireland television viewers woke up to scenes from Athlone Castle this morning (Tuesday), with the Ireland AM weatherman Deric Hartigan broadcasting live from the town landmark.

Deric donned period costume as he explored the castle's visitor centre, interviewing manager Carmel Duffy and cultural assistants David Landers and Nia Murray.

Carmel told him about how the castle was "steeped in history" and had "stood the test of time".

She also spoke about its unusual distinction of having been struck twice by lightning, in the 1100s and in the late 17th century, with devastating consequences on both occasions.

David Landers told Deric about the historic outfits and costumes on display at the visitor centre, while Nia Murray outlined the interactive nature of some of the exhibits and also included a mention of the Easter Egg Hunt taking place at the castle this Saturday.

The Athlone Castle segment of this morning's Ireland AM programme can be viewed on the Virgin Media Player here.

In addition, Deric Hartigan recorded his weather reports for the 12.55pm and 17.55pm slots from Athlone Castle today.
