Wilson's take all-Ireland title in women's 7s

The Junior Girls rugby team at Wilson’s Hospital School have the All-Ireland women’s 7s event.

It is the main national tournament on the girls rugby calendar, and they qualified after winning the Leinster format.

On a lovely sunny day in St Mary’s College RFC, the girls started their campaign against a well drilled Coláiste Mhuire side from Galway. Éabha O’Mahony, Sinéad Bowers and Catherine Dopeski stole the show in that tie to seal victory for the midlanders.

The girls followed that performance with convincing wins against St Anne’s from Killaloe and Royal School Armagh to book their place in the cup final.

Cáit Clerk, Megan Magovern, Emma Harding, Izzy O’Neill and Saoirse Byrne really stood out in those games for their amazing attacking, offloading and defence.

They faced their toughest test in the final, and they played Sacred Heart from Clonakilty in what was a nail biting contest.

The girls were on the backfoot from the get-go as the visitors took the lead on separate occasions, but Wilson’s showed huge resolve to bring the game back to a draw through Sinéad Bowers and Diana Izekor.

In the final play of the game, Diana scored an amazing individual try to win the game for Wilson’s at the last moment.

Many congratulations to the team and their coach Karl Dunne for a wonderful season.
