Record amount donated on Daffodil Day

A record amount of money was donated in the Mullingar area on Daffodil Day this year.

The people of the area donated more than €45,000 to the Irish Cancer Society on March 24, almost €15,000 more than in 2022.

Speaking to the Westmeath Examiner at the cheque presentation on the Market Square today, Monday, organising committee member Marie O’Toole praised local people for their continued support for the charity.

A long-time Daffodil Day volunteer, Ms O’Toole said that everyone involved with Daffodil Day locally was thrilled with the amount raised this year, particularly given the rise in the cost of living over the last 18 months.

She also thanked the volunteer collectors, who gave their time on the day, many of whom got drenched while doing so.

“We are absolutely delighted. Last year we had a figure of €31,300 for Daffodil Day, the first Daffodil Day after Covid. This year we came in with the figure of €45,614, which is phenomenal, and our best ever figure.

“The generosity of the people of Mullingar is just incredible. They are exceptional. We would like to thank everyone who contributed on the day.

“People have had to tighten their belts this year and on top of that we had the rain on the day, which wasn’t a factor the previous year. All-in-all there has been a tremendous response and we want to thank everyone for their support,” Ms O’Toole said.
