Hat-trick hero Johnny Keegan celebrates Mullingar Athletic's win.

Mullingar Athletic reach cup semi-final after emphatic win

Mullingar Athletic men’s senior team travelled to Lough Gowna in Co. Cavan on Saturday afternoon to take on Gaels Utd in the quarter finals of the Counties Cup.

Athletic settled early and got off to a great start with two goals inside the opening 25 minutes from Liam Brennan and Jamie Walsh.

Just after the half hour mark Efe Siode scored from a tight angle to make it 3-0.

Athletic were dominating at this stage and playing some great football.

Just before half time Athletic were awarded a penalty but the Gaels Utd goalkeeper produced a fine save.

It remained 3-0 at half time, but ten minutes into the second half Johnny Keegan made it 4-0 with a tap in at the back post.

Six minutes later it was 5-0 when great work by Dillon Matthews and Efe Siode allowed Johnny Keegan head in his second.

A depleted Gaels United team battled on to the end and they pulled a goal back when their left full scored with a great shot from 30 metres.

In the final ten minutes Liam Brennan set up Johnny Keegan who scored, to complete a second half hat-trick.

In the final minutes Gaels got a second goal when a Mullingar player deflected the ball into his own net. This was a fine win for Trevor Thompson’s side as Athletic ran out comfortable 6-2 winners and now advance to a Counties Cup semi final against Monksland.

Mullingar Athletic would like to thank Gaels Utd for a fine sporting game and for their hospitality last Saturday.
