The Bawn Inn darts side, winners of the inaugural Champion of Champions darts event in Westmeath.

The Bawn Inn win inaugural darts event

Westmeath darts star, Cormac Foley inspired The Bawn Inn to victory in the Champion of Champions event, at McHugh’s, Raharney on Friday night.

Foley, one of the most talented darts players on the Irish circuit, overcame Noel Devine of Doyne’s, Glenidan in the final, 3-2, after terrific darts. Earlier this season, Foley was in splendid form at the All-Ireland darts event, reaching the semi-finals of the big singles competition on the Saturday evening.

Another Westmeath player, James Moore is part of the successful Bawn Inn side.

There were some terrific darts played in Friday’s inaugural event and it certainly is an idea that could grow and develop.

The Bawn Inn, from outside Athboy, won the North Westmeath Darts league earlier in the season, while Mullingar Shamrocks were in Friday’s event as Westmeath League champions.

Doyne’s, who were runners-up in the North Westmeath League, played Shamrocks and won 4-3 on the night after very good darts.

That meant Doyne’s progressed to meet the Bawn Inn and after a very entertaining final, it was 4-3 to North Westmeath champions.

There was very little to separate the four teams on the night, with a high standard of darts on display as one might expect from these leading teams. Ross Kelly was excellent for Mullingar Shamrocks, as was Mickey McKnight, who showed his ability with a maximum. Doyne’s had impressive throwers in Andy Reilly and Noel Devine. For The Bawn Inn, Foley was in fine form as was Larry Murtagh.

Every game went to the last game and there was a great standard. Devine was on a double after 12 darts in one particular game, which shows the standard to which players were performing on the night.

Shield final

There is now just one remaining competition to be finalised on the darts scene, the Westmeath Shield final, which takes place on Friday, May 19 in Springfield, Mullingar Shamrocks. Clarke’s ‘B’, Mullingar and Bagnall’s, Rochfortbridge are the two teams involved.
