Blooming great day

Members Streete Active Retirement Group were on board just one of the many buses to arrive at the Phoenix Park on Thursday morning for the first day of the country’s biggest garden and flower show, Bloom.

The group enjoyed a day wandering through the hundreds of displays in the glorious sunshine.

Kevin Brady, group leader, said for many of them it was a chance to pick up ideas or purchase some gardening bits and bobs, or some beautiful products at the hundreds of exhibitions and merchandising stands.

“The gardens were all just simply spectacular, it’s hard to imagine the time it takes to put together this truly magnificent show.

“One of the highlights for us was the Gold Medal-winning Medium Garden. One of our group members, Mary Small from Ballymahon, a keen vintage car enthusiast, was asked by local Citroën dealer Pat Keenan if he could borrow her hammock car seat from her beautiful 1959 Citroën 2CV to feature as a display in the winning garden. The seats could be removed for family picnics in the French countryside when the car was built all those years ago.”

Kevin said the Streete group came away full of joy and are already making plans to return next year. “Above all, the weather crowned the day and we pray we get the same weather for our vintage show in Streete on June 25.”
