Daryl Gahan all set for Special Olympics World Games

Mullingar’s Daryl Gahan is all set to take part in the Special Olympics World Games in Germany from June 17 - June 25.

The talented 22-year-old is captain of the Irish soccer team at the event and is really looking forward to travelling to Berlin for what should be a memorable occasion. Daryl is a proud member of the Shooting Stars team in Coláiste Mhuire, Mullingar.

“It will be my first time to represent Ireland and I’m really looking forward to it,” he said.

Daryl was chosen following trials which took place in Abbotstown, Dublin in recent months and, having made a big impression, he was picked to lead the team in Berlin. A keen soccer star, Daryl played with Mullingar Town for many years.

As part of his experience to date, Daryl has met some of the great Irish stars of the Jack Charlton era, including Packie Bonner and Niall Quinn. A major Man Utd fan, he is delighted to see his favourite team making something of a revival under new manager, Erik ten Hag.

Sean Tone of the Coal Bunker Mullingar was delighted to provide work experience for Daryl when he was a student at St Brigid’s School, Mullingar and he met him last weekend to wish him well in Berlin.

“Daryl will be a great ambassador for Mullingar,” enthused Sean.

“He’s a credit to his parents, Johnny and Victoria, and to his former school, St Brigid’s. I met him while he was on work experience here from school and he made an impression. It’s great to give something back to people who are making a serious effort and Daryl is a very positive young man.”

Sean’s wife, Bernie also wished Daryl well and said it’s a proud achievement for him and his parents.

The Special Olympics World Games are the world's largest inclusive sports event. Thousands of athletes with intellectual disabilities compete together in 26 sports. There will be nine days of exciting and inspiring competitions - by athletes and for athletes.
