The late Peter McCormack, RIP.

Shock and sadness as popular Mullingar bar man passes

The passing of well-known Mullingar man, Peter McCormack on June 11 was greeted with sadness in the town and in many surrounding areas.

Peter worked as a bar man in Butler’s pub, Ashe Road, Mullingar (formerly The Green Inn) for 18 years and it was during that long period of service that he made so many friends and left such an indelible mark on their lives.

Peter was a great barman and his quick wit, humour and willingness to engage in banter were some of the wonderful qualities he will be remembered for. The customers who frequented the popular establishment during those 18 years got to know Peter well and he always remembered a face; he had a smile and welcome for everyone in his own inimitable way.

He was particularly friendly when customers called for family gatherings, sporting events, after games or on other occasions in Mullingar. Peter always took a keen interest in sport and would chat about the local games in Cusack Park. He enjoyed the success of Westmeath in 2004. Special gatherings were enjoyed following Cemetery Sunday in Mullingar over the years, for example, and people who returned home for the weekend would meet up at the venue, while occasions like Christmas were enjoyed by all.

Peter took great pride in his work and his attire always included a tie. He was totally committed and dedicated to his job.

There was shock and sadness in the Butler family when news emerged of Peter’s passing and he was much-loved and appreciated.

The closing of Butler’s pub in recent years marked the end of an era and Peter worked for a time in Gilleran’s, Mullingar.

Peter also served as a barman in Bennett’s pub, Pearse Street, Mullingar for many years during the 1980s and he made many friends during his years behind the bar at the popular establishment. He was very much loved and appreciated by all. He made friends with all customers over his years there and was renowned for being a hard grafter.

Outside of bar work, Peter had a great interest in the bog and rearing turf was an annual chore. He would be on the bog early in the morning before starting work behind the bar.

Peter got a terrific send-off when his funeral Mass was held on Thursday June 15 in the Cathedral of Christ the King, Mullingar. It was followed by burial in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Marlinstown.

Originally from Loughnavalley, Peter lived in Kilpatrick, Ballinea. Following a brave battle with illness, he passed away peacefully, surrounded by his devoted family at the Palliative Care Unit, Tullamore Hospital.

Peter was predeceased by his parents Maura and Peter, and his brothers David and Des; he will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend Mary (née Horan); beloved son Damien; brothers Eamon, Mike and Brendan; sisters Collette, Philomena, Jackie and Edel; Damien’s partner Des; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, friends and neighbours.
