St Colmcille NS Activity Day (part II)

In a previous edition, we featured an account of the St Colmcille’s NS Activity Day at St Joseph’s Secondary School in Rochfortbridge; this week, we feature Mary Kate Gilbert’s account of the day.

On Thursday May 25, my class and I went on a day trip to St Joseph’s. To start, we were led to our home room, where we put all our stuff and met the teachers who were showing us around, Ms Holloway and Ms Green, and two TY students, Rebecca and Finn.

We followed Ms Holloway and Ms Green out to the pitch, where we played bench ball, Simon says, penalties and tug-o-war, all under brilliant weather! Then it was time for snacks. TY students handed out fruit and Freddos. The fruit was great to quench my thirst after all the running!

Next, we headed to the science lab, where we conducted experiments such as making a marshmallow three times the size of a normal one, explosions, mini rockets, making our hair stand on end and setting our hands on fire! You could say things were getting heated!

When we entered the next room, we saw all the subjects and extra-curricular subjects, and our questions were answered, which was helpful and opened our eyes to what school in Rochfortbridge might be like.

Ms Green then took us to the gym, where three ping pong tables had been set up and, in the corner, there was limbo bar ready. The PE teacher put on some funky music and we all had a great time limboing!

After all that we were all quite thirsty! Thank God we were going over to home economics to make some mixed berry and banana smoothies. The teachers also taught us some helpful safety tips to remember when in or around the kitchen.

We also got to have a quick look at robots the students had made. They were very cool! They could go all around the place and pick up stuff too – it was amazing!

I think everyone will agree when I say we were hungry at that point! Good thing we were having chicken tenders and chips, with Capri Suns. It was VERY tasty!

To finish the day, we did some athletics and met Niall O’Brien, who teaches PE there and also plays for the Westmeath hurling team.

We had a brilliant day and it was a great experience.

Thank you to all the staff in SJR and in our own school for making it possible.
