Town Park cygnets missing

Two of the cygnets that have been nesting on the pond at Mullingar Town Park for the past number of months have gone missing.

The Westmeath Examiner was contacted by a number of readers who noticed that the young swans had went missing in recent days.

Pictures of the cygnets' mother sitting on her eggs and then nurturing her newly born brood in her nest on the pond captured the imagination of the public when they were posted on social media in April.

One reader who contacted the media said that people have been speculating that the cygnets have been killed and taken away by a fox or dog.

Westmeath County Council, whose staff maintain the Town Park, said that they had “heard nothing” about the swans.
