€131,241 raised for cancer services by the Moylagh 50 mile challenge

The Moylagh 50 mile challenge, a walking challenge around the regions of Meath, Cavan and Westmeath, has raised €131,241 for Irish cancer services at this year's event.

The challenge this year brought a crowd of just over 600 people, and with the good weather on the day, over 270 people made it to the finish line. A massive increase on last years numbers. A range of ages from late teens to people in their 70’s took part. The communities along the route came out in force, providing food and drinks outside their homes stretching the 50 miles.

The money is split 80% to Irish Cancer Society, 10% to LARCC and 10% to Palliative Care.

Since the inception of the event, €1,200,124 has been raised for the chosen charities over the twelve years.

Johnny Guirke chairperson of the organising committee said “We would like to thank all the people and businesses that took part over the years and invite them back again for 2024.The committee would also like to sincerely thank everyone who has donated to the running of the event or sponsored a piece of equipment used in the event. Without this, we would not be able to give 100% of the funds to these much-needed cancer services." he said.

David Jones from the JFK committee presented Bernie McHugh from LARCC Cancer Support Centre a cheque of €13,124.

“The LARCC cancer support centre provides support services for the cancer patient and their family members, the community spirit in Moylagh is commendable, thank you so much” said Bernie.

Next year’s challenge takes place on the 15th June 2024. More information can be found on their website 50milechallenge.com
