Late night ‘boy racers’ distressing residents

Concerned residents have used social media to highlight ‘boy racer’ activity on the N52 Delvin Road.

In an post to the Delvin Westmeath page on Facebook, one resident said doughnuts and wheelies were being performed on the road between Delvin GAA and Killulagh Cross late at night.

“Every night for the last few weeks and every weekend for maybe a year there have been boy racers somewhere between Delvin GAA pitch and Killulagh cross doing rings or whatever and revving their cars late at night. Sometimes it’s 11pm at night and sometimes it’s 1-2am. Nothing seems to have been done and the frustration is growing and growing – just wondering if anyone else has the been experiencing the same issue.”

In a second message posted to the page, another person said they had been followed and “surrounded” by people on quad bikes.

“I have been followed up the Delvin Road by these boy racers on quads, about six of them, with no helmets and no lights on the back of the bikes. They surrounded my car. They took a right at the Cloughan Inn and then a left at Drummond cross, heading up towards Clonlost.

“And like the [previous] poster – same timeframe, either 11pm or 1-2am, and mostly on a Friday night. They are waking my dogs and there are loud bangs. I have also been made aware of another spot in the Ballyhealy area [of Delvin] that was also in use overnight.”

The Westmeath Examiner contacted local gardaí for a response to the issues raised, and a spokesperson urged anyone who has had a similar experience to contact the Delvin Roads Policing Unit.
