Huge response to Greville art

A specially commissioned mural at The Greville Arms Hotel in Mullingar proved popular at this year’s Fleadh Cheoil for those looking for pictures they could post on Instagram.

Lee Anne Maye, daughter of Christy Maye, proprietor of the Greville Arms, was the artist behind the piece, which is near the hotel entrance on Pearse Street.

Following a successful mural creation for the event last year, Lee Anne was welcomed back to captivate the crowds again.

“John Cochrane [Greville Arms manager] came to me last year about doing a mural of wings and incorporating musical instruments for the fleadh.

“I worked with the mirror to create great movement visually in the piece. My brother-in-law Dave Cleary had found an old copper mirror, and suggested I use that and we created the harp with the mirror.

“I love mosaic and I think it worked really well, so this year we really stepped it up with the movement in the artwork visually,” she said.

Lee Anne also incorporated a tribute to singer Sinéad O’Connor, who passed away shortly before the fleadh.

“I took the first six notes from the sheet music of one of Sinéad O’Connor’s songs and incorporated them into the mural as a tribute to her,” she said.

Lee Anne has had an interest in art since school and went on to study the subject at third level.

“In school, art was my favourite subject, my teacher was Carol Wade and she was a great teacher and I just loved art in school.

“I went to art college in Limerick and I have a degree in fine arts after being there for four years.”

On her experience at the fleadh, Lee Anne said: “It was such an unbelievable week.”

“People have been so good. I’ve got so many messages on Facebook and Instagram and people just loved it [her artwork]. I’m delighted with the reaction, it’s been great.”
