Strong turnout at summer series, despite attractions of Irish Open

Mullingar Golf Club notes

Eagan's Order of Merit Summer Series

The penultimate round of the Egan Auctioneers sponsored summer series continued on what was a gloriously warm day. Despite the numbers at the Irish Open, Mullingar also attracted quite a number of visitors to play on very well presented course. In total, 45 visitors were in attendance, representing 26 different clubs.

Lady Captain Rosemary Whelehan made all the running in this week’s ladies division with 37 points, getting her over the line by the minimum from Josephine Purcell who finished with a very creditable 36 points. It was Josephine’s first appearance on the podium in the summer series and her score thoroughly deserved a prize.

The men’s division wasn’t as close and Derek Scally took the honours by four points with a huge score of 43. Matthew Maslin was the best of the rest with 39 points to take second place.

Adam Smith won the gross prize and has opened up a lead on the order of merit prize for the gross player of the series.

Next Friday will see the conclusion of this year’s Order of Merit. It was the first running of the competition and has proved very popular. Its popularity is down in no small part to the sponsorship from Aiden Egan at Egan Auctioneers on Mount Street, Mullingar.

Aiden has time and time again stepped up and given generously to so many events in Mullingar Golf Club. We deeply appreciate your sponsorship Aiden and wish you, your family and your business every good wish in the future.

9 & Dine

The final round of the Keenan Bauer sponsored 9 & Dine will take place on Friday September 15. It will be a foursomes competition and any combination can play.

It’s been a popular format all year and hopefully it will have a permanent place on the fixture list in the years to come.

While it’s fully booked at present, keep an eye for cancellations.

Don’t forget, golf is not compulsory, and those wishing to wine and dine are welcome for the evening and presentation of this year's Eagan's order of Merit Summer Series.

Junior notes

The junior programme came to a close at the end of August, but don’t despair! The club PRO James will be running Junior Coaching at the driving range starting on October 14: contact James directly to book.

We also encourage our juniors to keep up their practice throughout the winter and look forward to welcoming you all back next year.

Men’s Branch notes

The Seniors Summer Series concluded last month and was a great success, so many thanks to Billy Moore and Kieran McGurran for all their hard work.

When one door closes, another opens, so last week the regular senior 9-hole weekly competition on Tuesdays returned.

In addition to stableford points, bonus points will also be taken into account to determine the winners each week. With 58 players, the winner was Ger O’Sullivan with 21 points and 16 bonus points for a total of 37 points. The runner-up was Peter Dunne with 20 points and 17 bonus points also for 37 points.

In third place was Vincent Dolan with 20 points and 15 bonus points for a score of 35 points. Super Senior winner as Eugene Hill with 19 and 17 bonus points for a total of 36 points. Super super Senior winner was Brendan Timlim with 18 and 17 bonus points for a total of 35 points and best of the day was Peter Swords with 20 points.

Long handicap competition

Played over 9 holes and sponsored by the branch Vice-Captain Andrew Maslin, last week’s Long handicap winners are: Category 1 winner, Rodney Martin (10) with 24 points, Category 2 Denis Shields (15) also with 24 points, and Category Enda Smith (21), with 21 points.

Sunday Competition

Regardless of the threat of thunder, particularly in the afternoon, 122 members took part in last Sunday’s competition sponsored by The Greville Arms Hotel. The winners were: Alan Warde (10) with a score of 42 points. The Gross Winner was Matthew Maslin (7) with a score of 32 points. Category 1 winner was Andrew Maslin (9) with 39 points, Category 2 winner was Donagh McTiernan (15) with 40 points and Category 3 winner was Adrian Charles (20) on 41 points. The Senior winner was Dermot Maloney (22) with 40 points and the Junior winner was Dylan Lambden Hayes (8) on 37 points. Congratulations to all the winners and many thanks to our sponsor, the Greville Arms Hotel.

Next week’s competition is sponsored by Genesis Fine Arts/Mindy Brownes.

Ladies Branch

In glorious sunshine on Wednesday September 6 almost 100 Ladies enjoyed both the 18 and 9 hole Stableford competitions, very kindly sponsored by Keane’s Health Point Pharmacies.

With the course in terrific condition it was always going to be high points from the winner to claim first prize, and so it was that an on form Ann Marie Conlon playing off 16 returned a super score of 40 points to win the 18 hole competition. In second place playing off 26 with another great score was Maeve Donnelly. The Gross prize went to Fiona Burke (9) with 25 gross pts.

Well done to all on such great scores.
