Shoot ‘N’ Stars win floorball gold in Galway

Mickey Myers shows no sign of slowing down in his sports career despite approaching the age of 40.

Last weekend, he was competing at the Connaught Special Olympics floorball and he scored no fewer than 11 goals on the way to a team gold.

Floorball is a relatively new team sport in the Special Olympics programme. It is a hockey style game (similar to unihoc and ice hockey) and is played in a four versus four format. There are four members on the squad, four playing at any one time.

Mickey and his Shoot ‘N’ Stars Mullingar team-mates, Ger Kennedy, Thomas Daly, Sean Keenan, Jamie Kavanagh, Radu Muntean and JP Shaw, competed against two teams from each of Athlone, Galway and Loughrea.

Their coaches are Michael Keenan and Peter Sheridan.

They are on the qualification route for the Special Olympics Winter Games in Calgary, Canada, February 2024.

There are five Special Olympics areas in Ireland, the four provinces, plus eastern (Dublin) and a team from each goes forward to the Ireland games, in Craigavon and Belfast in March 2024

There should be four teams from Connaught at the Ireland games, including one ladies team, and Shoot ‘N’ Stars hope to be well represented.
