St Joseph’s 'awash with activity' for open event

St Joseph’s Secondary School in Rochfortbridge was awash with activity last weekend when they opened up their doors for what was a well attended open event.

“This is always a highlight on our school calendar,” said the principal, Margaret Cole. “It is a time when our school community comes together to welcome our new prospective students. Staff and students love to showcase what we do on a weekly basis through our activity based event for our new potential first years.”

The rooms were a hive of activity. Students were greeted at the doors with their parents and sent off on organised tours around the school, led by the students of St Joseph’s.

They were greeted in different rooms by student leaders, supported by staff, where they took part in activities related to the range of subjects that the school offers.

Technology, construction, engineering, home economics, art, music, technical graphics, business, science and the languages were all showcased, along with the core subjects English, Irish, maths, history, geography and some new offerings of horticulture and IT thrown into the mix.

The extensive range of extra curricular activities available for students include the usual sporting activities, debating, dance club, board games, active schools, eco schools, student council and more.

Parents were given talks by senior management and some parents gave lovely testimonials about their children’s experiences.

There was a heart-warming presentation given by the senior prefects, who outlined the induction programme that St Joseph’s offers, which ensures the smooth transition for first year pupils from primary to secondary level.

It was a lovely family occasion and the younger visitors left happy, many clutching newly potted bulbs, some art and crafts creations and a sense of excitement about what was ahead for them during their secondary school years.
