Kilbeggan's Michael wins Leinster cross country title

Ballyhale in Kilkenny was the venue for the Leinster Novice Cross Country Championships, and it proved to be a happy hunting ground for Kilbeggan native Michael Murphy as he stormed to victory last weekend.

Ran over 6000m, the often sticky and very undulating course did not stop Michael from producing an impressive performance.

The Tullamore Harriers athlete took charge right from the gun, moving forcefully to the front and continually pushing forward, he opened a significant gap on the rest of the field. Increasing his lead throughout, Michael came home a comfortable winner.

The performance bodes well for Michael for the remainder of the cross country season.

Michael is a son of Donegal native Mick Murphy, who is well known as a coach in athletics and Gaelic football circles.

Seamus Anderson of Trim AC was second and Eanna Moynihan O'Bradaigh from Dundrum South Dublin AC was third.

Also running on the Tullamore Harriers novice team was the ever improving David Hollywood, and the ever reliable Peter Bennett and Sean Reynolds. Cian Law was forced to retire mid-race, due to an unfortunate back spasm.

Tullamore Harriers AC congratulates Michael on his victory and says well done to the team.
