Man dies following assault in Limerick

A man has died following an assault in Limerick and one man has been arrested.

Gardaí responded to reports of an incident at a property on Sarsfield Avenue, Garryowen at around 4.45am on Saturday.

A man aged in his 40s was found unresponsive and was treated at the scene by ambulance personnel. However, he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The man's body remains at the scene, which is currently preserved for technical examination, which is due to take place on Saturday morning.

The coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course.

Another man, also aged in his 40s, was arrested at the scene and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda station in Limerick.

Gardaí are asking anyone with information in relation to the incident to come forward.

Those with camera footage, including CCTV and dash-cam recordings, from the Sarsfield Avenue area between 4am and 5.15am on Saturday morning are asked to make it available to gardaí.
