Science of Golf Event

MULLINGAR GOLF CLUB NOTES

There is a free event on Monday November 13 at 7pm in the clubhouse, where Dr Eoghan McNeill, sports psychologist and golfer, will be in conversation with Dr Barry Fitzgerald on the science of golf, and registration for the event is on www.midlandsscience.ie.

As you know golf is one of the most mentally changeling sports. Being able to stay calm and focused under pressure is one of the greatest skills a golfer can have. It can be the difference between winning a major or crumbling on the 16th. It will also be beneficial for members wishing to play on teams for 2024 - if you can focus the mind you’re halfway there.

Mullingar Golf Club Men’s Branch Notes

Senior Men’s Competition

Unfortunately bad weather and overnight rain meant that the course remained closed last Tuesday so no Senior Men’s competition was able to take place.

The Fair Green TV Winter League kindly sponsored yet again by our colleague Mick McCarthy commenced last Sunday 22 October. This popular competition will help hone our skills in preparation for the summer majors. The format will be like last year’s very successful competition, that being a Singles Stableford competition played over fifteen weeks.

Week begins on Sunday and ends on Saturday for cards. Only one score per week, competitors must play on the day they sign in for the competition.

Competitors are asked to fill out a separate scorecard for Winter League Returns.

The competition runs over 15 weeks with the end date of the competition and Last Card being 18 February, 2024. The best eight scores returned will be counted.

The winners of the Men’s Branch Club Fourball competition were finally settled last Saturday when Seamus Casey and Ed Dunne won on the 18th against Stephen Martin and Robert Jones. Congratulations to the winners and hard luck to the runners up.

Sunday Competition

Last Sunday’s competition was sponsored by the Men’s Branch and comprised a 15 hole sweepstake. Conditions on the day were mixed, but that did not stop Michael McCarthy (14) who emerged as winner with 35 points. The Gross winner was Simon Carr (2) with 30 points.

Category 1 winner was Leonard O’Mahony (5) with 32 points, Category 2 winner was Brendan McEvoy (10) with 34 points and Category 3 winner was John Morgan (20) with 33 points. The senior winner was Liam Lynam also with 33 points. Well done to the 78 members who played and congratulations to all the winners.

Competitions

With the reduced amount of daylight for the rest of the season, all future weekend competitions will consist of 15 holes and will be sponsored by the Men’s Branch.

A winter scratch matchplay competition has been organised for Men’s Branch members who have a handicap of 7 or less and is fixed at 32 players. There will be 8 groups of 4 with one winner from each group going forward to a knockout stage. All players/groups will be seeded by handicap.

Matches will be singles matchplay, but if agreeable, they can play a four ball format (but in group stage only - 2 matches). Each player will play a minimum 3 rounds and a maximum 6 rounds. There will be prizes for winner, runner-up and both semi finalists. Entry will be €10. If interested please put your name on the sheet. Closing date for entries is November 12. Further details are available on the notice board in the men’s locker room.

Date for diary

Mr Captain Steven O’Hara will host his dinner on Friday 10 November in the clubhouse. Book early to avoid disappointment.
