Mullingar Town celebrating 50th anniversary of Glen Abbey Cup win this weekend

This Saturday night November 11 in the bar at Mullingar Arts Centre, Mullingar Town will celebrate the 50th anniversary of winning the Glen Abbey Cup when "The Town" beat top Dublin side St Francis 3-2 after a replay in St Mel's Park.

The game was decided after two periods of extra time , two hours and ten minutes of football, as there were no penalty shoot-out in those days.

Tony Keegan, Vinny Murray and Donald Nea got the goals for The Town in front of three thousand supporters.

On the same evening, Mullingar Town will also celebrate the 45th anniversary of winning the Counties Cup in 1978 when The Town beat Caragh Celtic from Kildare 4 - 0 with Joe O'Hehir and Christy Rice each scoring two goals.

All of the players who featured in those two finals, as well as all ex and present day Mullingar Town players are being invited to the Mullingar Arts Centre bar for an evening of sing song and stories.

Each member of the Glen Abbey Cup side and each member of the Counties Cup side will be presented with a commemorative trophy on the night.

The club hope to have the Glen Abbey Cup and the Counties Cup on display on the night. The event kicks off at 8pm.
