Mullingar Tidy Towns hold first ever table quiz

Mullingar Tidy Towns held their first fundraising table quiz in the Annebrook House Hotel November 23 last. The event also gave the committee an opportunity to meet sponsors, local groups they work with and members of the wider community of the town.

The full house on the night kept quiz master Padraig Flynn and score master Bob Keating busy. Bob’s daughter Orla helped with the raffle tickets and the score board as well.

There was a large number of prizes in the raffle and the committee are grateful to all the sponsors. They believe it was like the Late Late Show and there was (nearly) prize for everyone in the audience. Pat, Adam, and Aishling were busy selling throughout the evening and Rosie called out the winners between rounds of the quiz.

The winning team, on 90 points, took first prize, sponsored by Buckley’s SuperValu, of €25 vouchers and bottles of wine.

There was a tie for second and it had to go to a further round of five questions; but there was another tie, so there was another round of two questions – and it was still a tie.

They were nearly going to have to book the hotel for the night to get a winner, but instead a toss of a coin decided it, and second prize, sponsored by the Greville Arms Hotel, was €20 vouchers. Third was €15 donated Mullingar Chamber of Commerce.

Bill Collentine, chairperson of Mullingar Tidy Towns, and on behalf of all the committee, thank Berty Dunne and the team at the Annebrook, “who provided us with the venue and lots of delicious hot food and wonderful floor service throughout the night, and even provided us with extra answer sheets when we ran out”.

Bill also thanked the sheet collectors and quiz checkers, Teresa, Irene, Bernie, Aishling, Jason, Tomas, Pat, Adam; Sean Doran, who, at the last minute, donated the pull-up sign where details of sponsors and supporters of Mullingar Tidy Towns were displayed; all who took part in the quiz and bought raffle tickets; those who could not make it on the night, but donated to the fundraising efforts, and the sponsors, “who never let us down when called upon”.

“Thank you all. Without all this support, we believe we could not achieve what we have achieved in the last few years – IPB Pride of Place All-Ireland winner 2022; SuperValu Tidy Towns Competition, bronze medal three years running (2021, 2022, 2023); IBAL (Irish Business Against Litter) survey, 2021 22nd, 2022 16th, 2023 eighth.

“We are looking forward to 2024 and have plenty of surprises in the pipeline – keep an eye on our social media platforms.

“We are also looking forward to working together with all for the beautiful town where we all live work and play,” Mr Collentine concluded.
