Delvin man addresses Fianna Fáil Ard Fheis

Delvin man Niall Gaffney addressed Fianna Fáil’s annual Ard Fheis earlier on November 4 in Dublin. He joined panel discussions with ministers, TDs, senators and councillors to discuss topics such as agriculture, climate change and the economy.

During one discussion on the economy with Finance Minister Michael McGrath and Minister of State Dara Calleary, Mr Gaffney raised the issue of access to cash services in Irish society.

“A key objective must be to ensure that the evolution of access to cash infrastructure does not move ahead of society’s needs and expectations and that this future evolution is handled in a fair, transparent and equitable manner,” he said.

Mr Gaffney, a former Ógra Fianna Fáil president, said he was particularly concerned of the effects a cashless society would have on older people.

He referenced the recent Retail Banking Review, which concluded that cash remains an important element of the payments system and the broader economy.

Mr Gaffney said it is essential that cash remains readily available to customers through ATMs and other means across the country.
