Singer Simon Casey.

Christmas is all about family for Simon

Simon Casey has become one of the Midland's best loved singers since he burst onto the scene way back in 2003 on the 'You're a Star' RTE talent show.

Since then, the Offaly native has done it all, recording hit albums, performing to 80,000 people at major concerts at home and abroad, and regularly appearing on Irish entertainment shows, including the Late Late Show, Open House, Ireland AM.

He is part of the hit ‘Take it To The Limit’ show featuring the music of The Eagles which has toured all over Ireland and across Europe. The Ballycumber singer also fronts one of the best and busiest wedding bands countrywide.

What is the build-up to Christmas like for you?

The build-up to Christmas is probably the most enjoyable part of it all for me. I love the Christmas markets and the school carol services. I have to say a big congratulations to The Ballycumber Christmas Lights & Market committee for organising an outstanding Christmas market in the village the last two years. It’s given the community a massive lift.

How and where will you spend Christmas this year?

I’ll spend Christmas in my own house and will have family over for dinner. Really looking forward to it.

What does the Christmas season mean to you?

It’s all about family. Obviously it’s always a busy time on the music front with concerts and weddings so I always look forward to a few days off before the big day.

Who is your Christmas hero?

It has to be the main man in red!

What are thankful for this year?

I’m just always thankful for family and friends and especially this time of the year.

What's your favourite Christmas memory from times past?

Lots of great memories but the one that stands out is singing ‘O Holy Night’ in a candlelit church at midnight mass when I was about 11.

What's your best loved Christmas tradition?

I usually sing a song or two with my friends and family on Christmas morning in Boher church. It’s a lovely tradition.

Favourite Christmas song or movie?

My favourite Christmas song without doubt is 'Fairytale of New York'. It's a bit more special this year. Shane McGowan was my hero.My favourite Christmas film is ‘Santa Claus, The Movie’.

How will you ring in the New Year?

I’ll be performing at a wedding this year. Apart from the year of COVID, I’ve always been gigging on NYE. It’s always a super night of celebration for the happy couple.

What's your big hope for 2024?

I’m looking forward to recording more music, putting the finishing touches to my new album. We have a busy schedule of ‘Take it To The Limit’ tour dates in Ireland, Holland and Germany so it’s gonna be all go. Long may it continue.
