Larissa Tormey takes on much-loved Christmas carol

Larissa Tormey, a singer-songwriter based in Westmeath, concluded 2023 on a high note after Hot Press magazine featured her rendition of the classic Christmas carol 'In The Bleak Midwinter' in their esteemed list of The Best Irish Artists Songs To Listen to This Week.

A long-held desire of Larissa's was to record her interpretation of this beautiful Christmas carol.

Reflecting on the inspiration behind the single, she explains: “This was the very first Christmas carol I learned upon moving to Ireland 22 years ago. I've been performing an acoustic version of it every Christmas, including a rendition during an interview on Shannonside FM with Charlie McGettigan, well known for his Eurovision-winning track 'We Were the Rock 'N Roll Kids'.

Collaborating with the exceptional producer and multi-instrumentalist Kevin Whyms, Larissa made a spontaneous decision to record and release her version of this cherished carol as a Christmas treat.

The single went on pre-sale on December 15 with Hot Press promptly praising it the same evening, stating, “A suitably powerhouse display of vocal capability, it’s an icy, melancholy-tinged new spin on a well-known classic, definitely reinterpreted with stirring shades of modern musical flair. Perfect listening for a chilly winter’s night.”

Kicking off the new year, Larissa is scheduled to perform on January 26 at Tuar Ard, Moate, sharing the stage with the esteemed singer-songwriter PJ Murrihy, known for penning hits for Daniel O’Donnell, Michael English, and many more.

“In The Bleak Midwinter” is available for streaming on all major platforms and Larissa's YouTube channel (@larissatormeymusic).
