Ashling Murphy's family thank public for their support following second anniversary

The Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund, in conjunction with the Murphy Family has thanked the public for their outpouring of support on Ashling’s second anniversary.

Taking to Facebook to express their gratitude, the Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund thanked the hundreds of people who "turned out in their droves to various events" to remember and celebrate Ashling's life.

They thanked those who attended or were involved in Ashling’s second anniversary mass in St Brigid’s Church, Mountbolus last Thursday, those who joined Durrow NS in remembering Ashling through a special celebration mass on Friday last and the people who attended a commemorative walk to Ashling’s memorial shrine along the Grand Canal recently. Some traditional music was played at her shrine to remember her love of music.

The Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund issued the following statement, saying:

"During this time of great darkness and difficulty, the outpouring of support offers a flickering light of hope in all that is good. It is also a testament to the countless lives Ashling touched and the lasting mark and influence she has left on our society.

We are committed to ensuring that Ashling’s name and legacy is kept alive and strong forever. With your support and through the aims of the memorial fund, we will continue Ashling’s wishes and continue to honour the person she was and the person she was destined to be. Given all that Ashling achieved in her short life, we can only imagine what she could’ve went on to do within the fields of education, music and sport and therefore it is our wish to continue her legacy."

Ashling was a graduate of Mary Immaculate College in Limerick and the college paid tribute to the late primary school teacher, stating that she was "a teacher, a dedicated sportsperson and a talented musician."

They added: "We were lucky to count her as one of our students."
