Lanesborough fire requires thorough investigation - Clarke

Sinn Fein TD for Longford-Westmeath, Sorca Clarke, has called for a full investigation into a fire that was started at a convent building in Lanesborough, Co. Longford yesterday.

Deputy Clarke was speaking upon hearing the news of the fire at the convent, which had been earmarked for Ukrainian refugees in 2024, and praised the fire service for their speedy response in getting the fire under control and averting further damage.

Deputy Clarke said: “I condemn this action and I am thankful that nobody was hurt. What happened is deeply concerning and must be condemned outright.

“I want to express my thanks to the fire service for their actions in getting the fire under control and averting further damage.

“Lanesborough is a quiet, peaceful town and something like this is certainly not the norm. People are alarmed by what happened, and what we need to see now is a full and thorough investigation as to how this fire started and that ensures those involved will be held fully accountable for their actions.

“Similar incidents have occurred in various parts of the state in recent months. This is a worrying trend that cannot be tolerated. Those responsible must be brought to justice.

“It is my understanding that the property had been earmarked for Ukrainian refugees in May."
