O'Brien set to run in local election

Former Independent Councillor Michael O'Brien has officially thrown his hat into the ring for the local election in the Moate electoral area.

Having garnered immense support from the local community, Mr O'Brien said his decision to run came after reflecting on the overwhelming backing he has received in recent times.

The Moate native highlighted disenfranchisement of Moate and surrounding areas since 2019, highlighting the need for a dedicated local representative.

"With Moate removed from the Athlone electoral area in 2019, the people of Castledaly, parts of Mount Temple, Baylin, and Athlone were unable to vote for a Moate-based candidate. This election retains the same dynamic, but the groundswell of support I'm witnessing indicates a strong desire for local representation," stated O'Brien.

Speaking on the importance of local representation, he underlined his commitment to understanding the unique needs, challenges, and opportunities of the area. With a track record of advocating for local people and projects, the former councillor expressed his eagerness to champion them anew.

"As an independent candidate, I call upon the community to rally behind my campaign. Let's transcend politics and focus on electing a councillor dedicated to working for the collective interests of our area," urged O'Brien.

With a plea for community involvement, Michael O'Brien is poised to embark on a campaign driven by the aspiration to reclaim a seat for Moate and collaborate with local initiatives for the betterment of the entire region.
