Killian’s device aims at improving cyclist safety
In the 2023 competition, Killian McGrath (fifth year) showcased a bike safety system he devised: this year, still resolute in his concern for the safety of cyclists, he returned with the results of an investigation and analysis of the safety of cyclists in Ireland and further development of the technological solution he invented to reduce injuries and fatalities.
"I have found when compared to international norms, Ireland falls far short in providing suitable cycling infrastructure, particularly in rural areas," says Killian, a cyclist, explaining why there is need for his solution.
Killian has developed a rear-mounted emergency alert system, which includes a camera and a small computer.
In the event of an accident, this will send the cyclist’s coordinates to their emergency contact.
In the last year he has refined the device, and a number of the judges at this year’s competition have suggested he should consider patenting his design.
