Inny FC U10s come home with share of points

Longford and District League

Two talented teams showed the best of what underage football has to offer during a hard fought draw between Inny FC and Abbey Rovers FC at Ballinamore, County Leitrim in a Longford and District League game on Saturday January 20.

Both teams sit near the top of the table in what is a close U10 league, and they have till the end of the season in April to open up a gap.

In the Ballinamore encounter, Inny FC went 2-0 up in the first half thanks to a strike by Fiachra Scally, with Jack Sheldrick ensuring it crossed the line, and another fine goal by Jack Sheldrick.

After Inny FC’s initial dominance, the home team, Abbey Rovers, made a resurgence, and pulled one back before half time.

Inny FC had to soak up a lot of second half pressure and went 3-2 down, though they would have been down more if not for some last gasp goal line tackles by Inny FC defenders and some acrobatic saves by their keeper Daniel Brady from Cullion.

After soaking up the pressure, there was an Inny FC resurgence in the last 10 minutes. Special mention to Donagh Bourke of Cullion for spearheading the attack with some memorising dribbling skills past the Abbey Rovers defenders to set up a few Inny FC chances, ultimately leading to the equaliser by Fiachra Scally for a superb team effort goal to make it 3-3.

The man of the match award went to Fiachra Scally of Inny Rovers for his two-goal tally.

Inny FC

Inny Football Club are based in Streete. Their underage teams compete in the Longford District League with teams from Longford, Leitrim, Cavan, and Roscommon.

Inny FC were founded in 2009 and provide opportunity for players of all ages and abilities to enjoy soccer. With a catchment area from Finea to Mullingar and all surrounding areas, the club field teams from U8 to senior grades and play their home games in Streete.

In recent years Inny FC girls teams at U12 and U14 levels have competed in the Longford League.

The success of Inny FC was highlighted when the U12 boys team won a prestigious national title, the Cook Cup, in July 2023, after beating Shamrock Rovers of Dublin in the final.

That was preceded by the same team winning the Longford District League on a tally of 50 out of 59 victories across two seasons.

Many of the other Inny teams are performing well in their respective leagues.

Inny FC are volunteer-led, and without volunteers, the north Westmeath community and the parents who transport their players to training and matches week in week out, the club would not be what it is today.

There are too many to thank, but a final mention must be made to club chairman Richard Fagan, who has been a huge driver of success at Inny FC, organising training and matches come hail, rain, or snow for the last 15 years.
