Large dead fin whale washed up on Mayo beach during storm

A large dead fin whale has been washed up on a Mayo beach during Storm Isha.

The matter has been reported on the Facebook page of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group.

The exact location was not disclosed.

The page revealed: "From the initial images received, it was clear the animal was a fin whale due to the diagnostic white right side of jaw and dark grey left side.

"This very recently dead, 20.7 meter whale was severely emaciated.

"Therefore, cause of death was almost certainly due to the fact that it had not fed in quite some time, for reasons unknown.

"Samples were collected for our Deep Diving and Rare Species Investigation Programme (DDRIP), supported by NPWS Biodata, which will be used to support future research projects on fin whales in Irish waters.

"The distinctive dorsal fin provides an opportunity to share images with photo-id catalogues, both the IWDG one and others within Europe, to see if this whale is known from elsewhere.

"Thanks to all of those who reported the animal, and a very special and massive thank you to IWDG volunteers Tom, Angela, Agatha, and Elizabeth for collecting biological samples, measurements and photographs of this fin whale. IWDG normally receive around two records of stranded fin whales per year.

"We advise people who are planning to go see the whale to be respectful, and maintain a safe distance. Whales are mammals and therefore have the potential to spread disease to humans, as well as pets. Please keep all dogs on a lead.
