Westmeath secondary students helping promote online safety

Three Westmeath secondary school students are among more than 140 students from across Ireland who are taking part in an online safety awareness training programme.

Athlone Community College student Bridget Donohoe Dunne, and Loreto College Mullingar students Jane Maxwell and Numra Rabbani, attended an in-person training day in Dublin as part of the Webwise Safer Internet Day (SID) Ambassador Training Programme.

This peer-led programme is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to lead their own online safety awareness raising campaign in their school or local community.

Safer Internet Day 2024 takes place on Tuesday, February 6. Its theme of Tech in Our World explores young people's views on new and emerging technology, and the changes they would like to see online.

The training programme in which the Westmeath students are participating gives students the opportunity to take a leading role in promoting a safer, better internet and tackle issues that are important to them including online bullying, misinformation, wellbeing, privacy and rights online.

Safer Internet Day is an EU-wide initiative to promote a safer internet for all users, especially young people.
