Former club member represents Ireland

Mullingar Tennis Club notes

Former Mullingar Tennis Club Member Simon Carr recently represented Ireland as a part of Ireland’s Davis Cup team that took on Austria in Limerick last month.

After missing out on Ireland’s tie against El Salvador last September, Carr made his return in front of a crowd of 2,400 avid tennis fans in Limerick in February. Ireland faced a major force in Austria with their superstar player, Dominic Thiem. Ireland were expected to lose by big margins against a strong side like Austria, which inevitably happened. Ireland went down 4-0 to Austria in their World Group 1 play-off match in Limerick. The fifth match in the Davis Cup tie was not played. One standout for the Irish during the Weekend was the showcase of rising Irish star Michael Agwi who took the last match of the day on Sunday to a Championship tie-break against Lucas Miedler. Ireland’s next Davis Cup match is in September against Tunisia in Tunisia. Mullingar Tennis Club is proud to have helped a player such as Simon Carr on his journey to playing at the top level of tennis.

U10 tournament doesn't disappoint

On Saturday March 1, Mullingar Tennis Club held an U10 tournament for the up and coming stars of tennis in Mullingar. The kids played both singles and doubles matches with some children opting to play just for the fun of the game with no competitive aspect which is always supported. Tennis is always great for just having a fun time! In the actual tournament, Alexander Alves won the U10 group A showing great skill, determination and sportsmanship throughout the games and tournament.

Thanks to everyone involved including members of the TY program for supervising games and of course to the parents for bringing their kids along for a great day. From Mullingar Tennis Club we would like to say well done to Alexander Alves and to all the kids involved for having a fun time, showing wonderful sportsmanship and playing great tennis.
