Johnnie cuts the tape with David Smyth

Ryan’s reopens after new owner does revamp

Long a landmark on Main Street, Tyrrellspass, the John Ryan Hardware store has been given a makeover by new owner, David Smyth, and his team.

The Ryan name has been retained over the door, however, and in a nice touch, previous owner John was asked back to cut the ribbon for the official reopening last Friday week.

“One big change is we’ve had to bring in computers: John didn’t need one – he was as good as a computer himself!” joked David, as he outlined the changes that he, along with manager Paddy Farrington and the other team member, Damien Brennan, have introduced, adding that the shop is now aligned with the Homevalue chain.

“We’ve completely refurbished the premises to a high standard, new windows, a new ceiling, new floors, new shelving, new everything,” says David.

By installing a smart shelving system, the team are not just able to store all of the vast variety of items John stocked, but they were able to create space for a new bathroom showrooms, backed by a comprehensive range of plumbing supplies. Some of their major bathroom suppliers are Sonas, RT Large, Nico and Eastbrook.

Fashion has entered the world of workwear – and so for fans of Snickers gear, Ryan’s is sure to please. The shop has all the big-name tool brands in as well, including de Walt.

An addition to the business is a new yard, which means the store now supplies wood and concrete. It also has a garden centre section, selling seeds, tools, general garden supplies and bedding plants.

Delvin native David, who runs the well-known David Smyth Catering business, is also owner of The Barn wedding and party venue in Tyrrellspass, which is managed by his daughter Amy Duignan.
