New FG leader could be confirmed in Westmeath this weekend

The identity of the new leader of Fine Gael and Taoiseach could be announced in Westmeath this weekend.

In a statement released this afternoon Fine Gael announced that the closing date for nominations for party leader has been brought forward to 1pm this Sunday.

The party is holding the election selection convention for the Midlands North-West European constituency in the Sheraton Hotel in Athlone this Sunday.

If no one comes forward to challenge Simon Harris, he will be confirmed as Fine Gael leader by the returning officer, chairman of the executive council Willie Geraghty, at the end of the selection convention.

The Midlands North-West convention will commence at 3pm in the Sheraton Hotel, Athlone.
