Westmeath promoted despite losing unbeaten record

Westmeath have been promoted from Division 3 of the Allianz Football League - despite losing to Sligo at Markievicz Park today (Sunday).

Sligo won on a scoreline of 1-14 to 0-11, with Sean Carrabine scoring the game's only goal, as Westmeath's unbeaten run was ended.

However, Down's victory over the other promotion contenders Clare in Newry (3-15 to 1-10) ensures that Westmeath go up in second place.

Westmeath will now meet Down in the Division 3 league final next weekend.

The result of the league final - rather than the Division 3 table - will determine Sam Maguire Cup placings if required later in the year, which means there will be plenty at stake when Westmeath renew rivalry with the Mourne men. The sides played out an exciting draw at TEG Cusack Park last weekend.

Despite the introduction of John Heslin off the bench for his first appearance of the season, Westmeath produced a very disappointing display against Sligo.

But the result at Páirc Esler still means it's still a day to remember for Lake County fans, with the key target of promotion secured.
