Holly Cairns visits local election candidate Ali Morris in Mullingar

Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns visited Mullingar today to meet the party’s newly selected local election candidate Ali Morris and discuss issues affecting the community.

Ali, who is standing for the Social Democrats in Mullingar, said: “With the 2024 local elections just over two months away, I am very appreciative that Holly has taken the time to come to Mullingar today to meet me and my campaign team.

“I was happy to introduce Holly to some of the team behind Bailiú, a new community arts festival for the town which will take place over the May bank holiday. As an events worker, I am passionate about the value of the arts to the town.

“Mullingar had two amazing years of the fleadh and now we need to fill that gap. It’s important to have these events throughout the year to bring people together and also create employment and tourism opportunities for the area.”

Ali said Mullingar is famous for its musicians, and it has many other creative people.

She said that Cúige Studios, where she met Ms Cairns today, features graphic design, painting, photography and videography, and the team there have over the last two years, hosted many classes, workshops and events.

“Apart from the arts, I am also passionate about sustainability and the environment. We face huge challenges in the coming years as we try to deal with the effects of climate change. I believe it’s important that we begin to face these challenges at a local level.

“This is an all hands on deck moment, and while it seems overwhelming, there is nothing we can’t achieve if we work together. In this respect, I feel that arts and culture have an important role to play by bringing us together, helping us to understand one another and work collaboratively to find solutions.”

Speaking during her visit to Cúige Studios in Mullingar, Holly Cairns said: “This is a time of growth for the Social Democrats and I am so encouraged to have strong candidates like Ali standing for the party in this year’s local elections. Ali is deeply committed to seeing the kind of change that people around the country are ready for and would be an exceptional councillor for Mullingar.

“I hope that as many people as possible get behind Ali’s campaign so we can achieve our goal of increasing our representation on local authorities after the June 7 elections.”
