PJ and Eoin the right Pair on fun event
Mullingar Bowls notes
Staged over a single night, the club's Open Pairs competition proved an enjoyable evening on Saturday last, April 6.
Drawn as the first pairing, PJ McManus and Eoin Corrigan were to stay in that pole position to claim the title after some hard fought games.
In the decider, the winners displayed their quality against hot favourites, Eugene McComb and Joe Kincaid.
To advance to the decider, Eugene and Joe saw off the challenge of, initially, John FitzSimons and Paddy Montgomery and then Glen Ridsdale and Mark Foran, recipients of a first round bye.
For their part, Eoin and PJ dominated the top half of the draw, ending the interest of Bernie FitzSimons and Des O'Brien.
They then accounted for the formidable pairing of Dolores McCormack and John Fitzpatrick, who had earlier triumphed over Pat Layde and Kevin Nolan.
In the final, Eoin and PJ played sensible, controlled bowls and always had the edge.
Despite their best efforts, Joe and Eugene could not get on terms and had to settle for the runner-up spot.
A most enjoyable supper followed the prizegiving.
