Frank Mullen, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s last year at the age of 60, is embarking on a 300km journey down the Shannon River, from June 28, to shine a light on the importance of exercise, community, and seizing the moment, in support of Parkinson’s Ireland. (Details below.)

Home Instead host Parkinson’s Disease awareness session

April is not just the beginning of spring; it also marks Parkinson’s Awareness Month, an annual observance dedicated to shedding light on Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects more than 10 million people worldwide.

The month is about education, support, and community. In Ireland, Parkinson’s is the second most common neurodegenerative condition after Alzheimer’s. The incidence is 1-2:1000 of the general population and 1:100 of the over 80s – approximately 15,000 people living with Parkinson’s in the country.

Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Session

Home Instead Midlands host a Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Session on Friday, April 12, at the Mullingar Park Hotel. It is a free event and will feature a local speech and language therapist who specialises in Parkinson’s, Tony Dalton from Move4Parkinsons Charity; chair yoga instructor Miriam Coogan, and Ken Fitzpatrick, who leads exercise classes tailored for those with Parkinson’s.

The goal is to equip individuals living with Parkinson’s and their families, as well as Home Instead professional caregivers, with knowledge and support, fostering a sense of empowerment and community.
